Why didn't I know about this before?

Phil Collins. Gorilla. Drums. It's all an ad for Cadbury Dairy Milk (which we can probably find at Wegman's).

And it. Is. Odd.

Encouraged to find this after watching the sumptuous "Walking in Your Mind" mashup by Ithaca Audio for the umptieth time. Oh and don't click on the box about the referee.

Satellite of Love n' Popcorn

Just a classic MST3K clip. Not hatin' on Orville and his grandson, but don't they do a spot-on job?

And while we're talking popcorn: anybody remember this creepy mistake of an ad?

108 years of British history, through bread

Since I've spent a total of seven days out of my entire life in the UK, and only a few years ago, I'm not familiar with Hovis Bakery. But this ad of theirs runs through over a century of British history, and it's really cool.

What do you MEAN there's nothing wrong with high fructose corn syrup!?

My jaw just about dropped on the floor when I saw this ad this morning.

I'm not the only one who's noticed (qv Slashfood). Yes, as the NY Times points out, the truth is that there is no exact proof that shows HFCS is directly responsible for increasing obesity rates. Larger portion sizes, poorer dietary habits and the cheapness of things with HFCS in them probably play as big a role. But as one doctor on the Mayo Clinic puts it, people aren't freaked out about it for nothing: it is cheaper, longer-lasting and sweeter than sugar and winds up in many things that sugar isn't put in as often. We eat - and drink - more of those things, which are often of very little nutritional value. And unlike sugar, honey, vanilla or even some artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrup usually tastes nasty. Plus, it incurs the wrath of some environmental activists (as noted in the Washington Post). So no, that ad by King Corn isn't 100% deceitful - but it's certainly not being truthful to us, either.

Blastwurst from the Pastwurst

I don't smoke and never have. I have, however, eaten more than my fair share of hot dogs in my life. So which is worse for your health? I don't know, but your clothes don't smell funny in a room full of hot dog eaters.

Segue time: this ad for Esskay Franks from the 50's, written by Stan Freberg and starring Jessie White. I didn't know people even considered quitting smoking back then, much less replacing their habit with hot dogs.

Fortified with Weird

Why does this commercial for Soyjoy freak me out so much? Is it the cloud? The way the little cartoon person is walking? Or maybe the houses waving to her in the distance?

Strange food things on the TV lately...

A few mini-posts together...

From the "Once again, I know no Southerner who would eat that" files

I joke about Paula Deen a bit. I still do like her, despite all the dangerous things she has been making lately. But I am first to admit that she's becoming a parody of herself. The latest shocking thing that I saw her make was on her recent brunch episode. Most of the stuff she made looked tasty to me - garlic cheese grits (a stick of butter - fattening), a fruit parfait (seems safe, though looks can be deceiving), etc.

Then came this. Her burger (not so bad) between two halves of a two Krispy Kreme donuts (WHOA!), topped with a fried egg (my chest hurts...) and several slices of bacon (What's that sharp pain in my left arm?). She told her friend, who sang at her most recent wedding and who got the first bite (nice way to treat a friend), "We're gonna get arrested for this!" So even Paula realizes what a bad idea this is!

***Gasp!*** AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

Here! It'll make ya' FEEL good FEEL good FEEL good FEEL good FEEL good FEEL good*

Again - this is for a brunch. You probably won't see this on the menu at Gertrude's. Actually you don't find this on the menu at the Lady and Sons in Savannah either. Wonder why?

I'm actually surprised she didn't deep-fry it.

From the "Heheheh, See my super-keen bachelor pad in my mom's basement" files

I have searched all over the web to find a video of this absurd, irritating ad (enough people on bad commercial websites have bitched about it). But alas, no one has had the foresight to YouTube it yet. So I just took some photos. Y'all know this ad. It's Golden Corral's "steakdar" ad.

I can so tell that he's rare. All us rare guys can "sense" it.

"Steak-dar" - it's a gift. Insert own punchline.

ESP for steaks?

*EXTRA kudos to anyone who remembers THAT reference. Hint: anti-drug PSA, Saturday morning TV in the 1980's. It might've been local to Baltimore but I could be wrong.

Seasons Eatings...AAAAAAA!

Even more than that super-bizarre Iron Chef Holiday Sugar Battle comes this even stranger ad a la those Rankin/Bass Claymation ads that always came on TV twenty years ago:

At least Messrs. Snow and Heat Miser aren't in the ad, too:

Chocolate McRain

Just when I got the rain out of my brain...

And a fun, hip-hoppy one. This is the last one I will post, I promise.

UPDATE: I lied. Just as I was imagining "Chocolate Rain" set to Gwen Verdon's "Mexican Breakfast" dance routine, I found out that someone did their own version. But instead of posting it I'll spare you and just leave a link.

Wegman's probably won't be using this in their ads...

Ah, the British:

It gets much worse towards the end. But hey, Marks & Spencer does bang-up business in the UK, so they can get away with this.

Oh duh, it just hit me this is a spoof. M&S didn't make this. But it would've been funny if they had.

I just didn't feel regular until...

My God, I just saw two - two - pharmaceutical ads in one commercial break while watching the CBS Evening News. Okay, I wasn't really watching, it was just on after WJZ's evening news. And another one is on now!

We can tell just how nutso this is all getting when we start seeing food commercials start to resemble these obnoxious, bullshitty "I am suffering but now I've taken this wonderful medicine and now my life is perfect" ads.

Oh lookie, they have. Dannon DanActive - with l. casei! Hey, didn't Louis Leakey find that in Olduvai Gorge?

Their Dannon Activia commercial is even more grating. This, however, from some guys in northern England, has a funnier take on the "yogurt-as-wonderdrug" commercial. Even if it is a bit long for a commercial. I present: Actimel (the UK version of DanActive). Also with that fucking l. casei!

Rap Cat?

Hands down, the funniest, strangest fast food ad I have seen in a very long time. From Checkers.

UPDATE: Nope, this is even stranger. Rap Cat has his own website.
