In Mourning

Tonight my cat, my little one died very unexpectedly.  I will be holding off on publishing anything new until the end of the month. He gave me so much happiness and joy for 13 years.  I will miss him.

Julia Child and the Perfect Omelette

Julia Child passed seven years ago today.  In memoriam, her classic omelette.  I learned how to make it from her.

Our Sarah Jane

Publicity still from The Sarah Jane Adventures, from the BBC Radio Times

Totally not food-related, but I just had to express my sadness and shock over the passing of Elisabeth Sladen, who played Sarah Jane Smith, my most favorite companion on Doctor Who. Sladen appeared in various shows but Doctor Who her claim to fame, not only acting alongside two of the original series' Doctors (Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker) but appearing in two spin-offs (including the recent Sarah Jane Adventures) and in cameos with one more Doctor (David Tennant) in the new series (the newest Doctor, Matt Smith, did a cameo on her show).

This clip of her last regular appearance on the classic series (the last episode of The Hand of Fear) was posted on the Entertainment Weekly website in a tribute by Clark Collis.

'Til we meet again, Sarah.

Because she was one of my favorite Golden Girls

Another Golden Girl ventures into the great beyond. Now Blanche can join George in her dreams for good. To wit, my favorite Rue McClanahan clip of all time, involving delirium and a pair of raw eggs.

"I went to buy a nectarine!"

Everyone's heard about Estelle Getty passing away by now. but I just found out that today - three days after she died - is her 85th birthday.

Lifetime is giving their belated birthday present: a Golden Girls marathon. They're airing the "nectarine" episode right now, where the cameras follow Sophia around her busy day while the other Girls are stuck in the house figuring out what to do.

I wanted to find a Golden Girls scene to post on here, something with Sophia cooking something (this is a food blog after all). All I could come up with was this, um, odd video. Very, very odd video.

In Memoriam

Photo of two relief workers sailing towards the Nine Hundred Restaurant Bar and Grill, in the Lakeview section of New Orleans, LA, September 2005. One of the worst-hit sections of the city, most citizens were fortunate enough to escape, though corpses were found in some attics as late as spring of 2006. Only two years later is this part of town showing signs of revitalization.

Moment of Silence

I am sure you can pardon the non-food topic. Governor O'Malley asks Marylanders to join our brothers and sisters in Virginia and pause for a moment of silence on Friday at noon. Also wear VT colors (maroon and orange) if you have them. Sounds like a good idea. (Picture taken at Towson University, Towson, MD, April 2007)
